Flo Entler is running for the Sarasota City Commission in the Nov. 3 general election, seeking one of two at-large seats.

The nonpartisan race features three candidates. Voters choose up to two. Entler faces Jen Ahearn-Koch and John Harshman. Entler is on the ballot, according to BallotReady election data and the city's elections page.

Entler said she is running in part because she feels the commission is not representing residents' concerns, according to Suncoast Searchlight.

Candidate information

Entler grew up on Long Island and moved to Sarasota 37 years ago, according to her city election filing. On her campaign website, Entler describes herself as a local business owner and community advocate. She is also a marathon runner who has completed triathlons and competed in four Boston marathons, according to the same site.

Experience and public service

Entler serves as president of the Arlington Park Neighborhood Association, according to her Suncoast Searchlight candidate profile. She has also participated as a community advocate before the Sarasota City Commission, according to the same profile.

On the issues

Government accountability: Entler told Suncoast Searchlight that she does not feel the commission is listening to residents. She said the lack of representation at City Hall is a major reason she decided to run.

Performing arts center: Entler said she supports a new performing arts center if the Sarasota Performing Arts Foundation can finance it and the Van Wezel is retained in some form. "If the foundation can raise the money, let's make it happen. I don't know why the city has to pay for this," she told Suncoast Searchlight.

Zoning and housing: Entler said on her campaign website that a zoning text amendment can roll back corridor height and mass to what roads, drainage and neighborhoods can handle. The tool would still allow reasonable commercial and mixed-use projects, she said. She said the city must use it to let Sarasota grow wisely rather than wildly.

Public safety and events: Entler's campaign website calls for labeling any event with a street closure, alcohol in the right of way, or a sound ordinance exemption a "high impact" event.

Endorsements

Entler has been endorsed by the Sarasota County Democratic Party, as reported by Suncoast Searchlight.
