Two North Port artists spent six months building one-of-a-kind birdhouses, and now their creations fill a display case at Shannon Staub Library where every piece is for sale to benefit the library's community programs.

The exhibition, called "Birdhouse Village," opened in early August at the library at 4675 Career Lane, off Toledo Blade Boulevard on the Suncoast Technical College campus. It runs through Aug. 31, according to the Sun Newspapers.

Two Local Artists Spent Months Crafting Every Piece by Hand

Local artists Sheri Simon and Trisha Williamson handcrafted and donated every birdhouse in the collection. Simon said the pair picked up the craft only about six months ago. Williamson said each piece takes weeks to complete between decorating, painting and drying time.

The birdhouses carry names like "The Mosaic Heart Cottage," "The Keeper of Tides" (shaped like a lighthouse perched on a handmade beach scene) and "The Harbor of Returning Wings" (shaped like a boat). Each one sits behind a small story card with a short narrative written for it.

Proceeds From Every Sale Go Toward Library Programs

Christine Soderbeck, a spokesperson for Friends of Shannon Staub Library, said visitors can browse and read the stories or buy a birdhouse outright. "Each birdhouse is a unique work of art and will be available for purchase, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Shannon Staub Public Library," Soderbeck said. "Every purchase helps fund library programs, events and community enrichment."

The Friends group also operates the FriendShop Bookstore inside Suncoast Technical College, just outside the library entrance, selling books, CDs and puzzles at low cost.
