Sarasota County's Fruitville Library will reopen Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. after nearly 10 months of construction, giving residents access to renovated reading and study spaces while work continues on a larger, approximately $28 million library and history center project.
The library at 100 Apex Road, near Celery Fields off Fruitville Road, closed Dec. 18, 2025, for renovations and expansion.
According to Sarasota County's capital improvement documents, the combined project includes approximately $26 million in construction costs and nearly $2 million in design costs.
The county originally projected a summer 2026 reopening. The October opening comes several months later than planned, although county officials have not publicly identified a specific reason for the revised schedule. The project is funded through the county's one-penny surtax.
What's available when the library reopens
Visitors returning Oct. 15 will find fresh paint, new furnishings and additional areas for reading, studying and collaboration, according to a county news release.
Computers, printing services, study areas, collaboration rooms, children's programming and the library's full collection of books, DVDs and assistive devices will be available.
During the closure, a temporary library operated from a portable unit in the parking lot, offering limited borrowing and pickup services.
Several improvements remain unfinished, including a Creation Station makerspace, a dedicated Teen Room, a larger meeting room with upgraded technology and an outdoor courtyard with garden space.
The county has not announced opening dates for those areas. Visitors may encounter construction activity while the remaining work continues.
"Fruitville Library is a well-used community space, and we know how much our patrons have been looking forward to coming back inside," Renée Di Pilato, director of Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources, said in the county's Oct. 7 announcement.
"Reopening the library gives the community the opportunity to begin enjoying the renovated space while we continue working toward the next phase of this project."
New History Center will preserve Sarasota's past
A major component of the project is a new 30,000-square-foot Sarasota County History Center under construction adjacent to the library.
The facility will replace the county's existing History Center, previously housed in an aging building in Osprey that officials determined was inadequate for preserving its extensive collection of historical materials.
According to the county's project overview, the new center will include a 180-person auditorium, classroom, conference room, research facilities and exhibition spaces.
A digitization lab will give residents access to technology for preserving family photographs, film, audio recordings and other historical materials. Climate-controlled storage areas will protect the county's collection of photographs, maps, artifacts and archival records.
An anonymous $100,000 donation announced in August 2025 will support digitization equipment and a public Memory Lab.
Construction on the History Center is expected to continue through winter 2026. The county has not announced a firm public opening date.
Until the new facility opens, History Center services remain available at the Osprey Library, 337 N. Tamiami Trail. Some archival materials require advance notice before a research visit.
Fruitville Library has been among the busiest branches in Sarasota County's library system for more than two decades.
