Sarasota County Schools will open a new fall School Choice application window Thursday, Oct. 22, giving families an earlier opportunity to request enrollment at a district-managed school outside their assigned attendance zone for the 2027-28 school year.

The district announced the application window on X Thursday, Oct. 15, describing the fall application period as "new this year."

Previously, the district's School Choice application process primarily operated during the spring.

The program allows families to request enrollment at participating district-managed schools other than the schools assigned based on their residential addresses. Placement is subject to district eligibility requirements and available space.

The district also highlighted the new application window in its October In Touch community newsletter.

A closing date, list of participating schools with available seats and application link could not be confirmed from the district's publicly accessible announcements as of Oct. 15.

New application period gives families more time to plan

The additional fall window comes as Sarasota County Schools works to expand educational options and attract families to district-managed schools.

Superintendent Terry Connor discussed the growing importance of school choice during an Aug. 17 media conference.

"School choice is expanding and accelerating rapidly," Connor said, according to a report by the Venice Sun.

Connor, who has led the district since July 2023, has promoted the district's Future Focused Strategic Initiative as part of efforts to strengthen educational opportunities and retain students.

Sarasota County Schools serves approximately 44,000 students across more than 50 schools. About 36,600 students were enrolled in traditional district-run classrooms for the 2026-27 school year, according to Longboat Key News.

The district faces enrollment pressures amid the expansion of charter schools and Florida's state-funded private school scholarship programs.

The new fall application period provides another opportunity for families to explore public school options and make enrollment decisions ahead of the next academic year.

How families can prepare to apply

Families interested in requesting a school outside their assigned attendance zone should review the district's School Choice information and watch for application instructions.

School assignments are governed by district policies, including requirements related to residency, eligibility and available capacity.

Dr. Tiffany Francis, the district's supervisor of School Choice, is listed as a contact for families seeking additional information.

She can be reached at 941-927-9000, ext. 32255, or by email at [email protected].
