Sarasota's City Commission swore in two at-large commissioners on Friday, Nov. 6, and picked new leadership for the year ahead.
At the annual statutory meeting, incumbent Jen Ahearn-Koch and newcomer Flo Entler took the oath of office for four-year terms. Deputy City Auditor and Clerk Lori Rivers administered the oath, according to a city announcement.
Once both commissioners returned to the dais, the five-member board unanimously selected District 3 Commissioner Kathy Kelley Ohlrich to serve as mayor. Commissioners also unanimously chose Ahearn-Koch as vice mayor. Both selections cover a one-year term.
Ohlrich succeeds outgoing Mayor Debbie Trice, who chose not to run for a second term. Trice delivered the city's annual State of the City address before the swearing-in, the city said.
The full commission now consists of Ohlrich, Liz Alpert, Ahearn-Koch, Entler and Kyle Battie.
Ahearn-Koch, a commissioner since 2017, led all three candidates in the Nov. 3 election with 11,690 unofficial votes, or about 40.72%, the Sarasota Observer reported. Entler finished second with 10,067 votes at 35.07%. A third candidate, John Harshman, received 6,951 votes.
Entler ran for elected office for the first time. She is a frequent presence in the commission chamber as a neighborhood advocate and most recently served as president of the Arlington Park neighborhood association, the Observer reported.
In coverage published Nov. 3, the Observer quoted Entler saying she heard about neighborhood safety, quality of life, flooding, overdevelopment and a lack of affordable housing on the campaign trail and planned to work on those issues in office. She spoke at a watch party at Tamiami Tap on election night.
Ahearn-Koch has seen nearly two complete turnovers on the commission since she was first seated, the Observer reported. She said she expects the board with Entler at the dais to be productive.
The Nov. 6 meeting began at noon at City Hall, 1565 First St.
