A $2,500 grant from the Junior League of Sarasota will keep participants fed and hydrated during Big Waters Land Trust's free outdoor education programs for the rest of 2026.
The Osprey-based land trust announced the award Monday, July 21, saying the money will fund healthy snacks and beverages at its remaining nature programs this year. The goal: make sure a growling stomach or an empty water bottle doesn't keep anyone from staying for a full session.
"Access to a simple snack or a bottle of water can make all the difference in whether someone feels welcome and able to fully take part in these experiences," said Sarah Denison Williams, who leads Big Waters' nature-based programs. "Thanks to the generosity of the Junior League of Sarasota, we're able to remove that barrier and help participants of all ages stay comfortable, engaged, and connected to nature."
Big Waters has committed to providing nutrition and hydration support at a minimum of 60% of its education programs in 2026, according to the organization's announcement.
The grant is part of the Junior League of Sarasota's community funding program, which awards up to $10,000 per nonprofit per cycle to organizations serving Sarasota County. The league, based at 3300 S. Tamiami Trail, has operated for more than 60 years and says it helped create local institutions including Children First, the Child Protection Center and Teen Court.
Christine Johnson, president of Big Waters Land Trust, said the programs aim to build lasting connections to the natural world. She described the organization's education work as sparking curiosity that participants carry home to their families.
Big Waters, formerly known as the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, rebranded in 2024 to reflect an expanded service area spanning Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. The trust says it has permanently conserved more than 20,000 acres. In April, it also received a $5,000 grant from the Lakewood Ranch Community Foundation for two programs targeting about 70 residents.
