An 8-foot stainless steel sculpture called "SWING" will be unveiled Thursday, July 30, at Payne Park Tennis Center, adding a permanent public artwork to a downtown Sarasota recreational facility that draws players and visitors year-round.

The free dedication ceremony begins at 11 a.m. in the tennis center's interior courtyard at 2050 Adams Lane. City representatives, the artist and project partners will speak, and attendees can view the piece up close, according to the city of Sarasota.

Brooklyn-based artist Michael DiCarlo created the sculpture, which transforms the shape of a tennis racket into a spiraling composition of rising forms. Each racket element arcs upward, and the piece offers shifting perspectives as viewers move around it, according to Your Observer. DiCarlo has spent nearly a decade working internationally as a designer, fabricator, consultant and educator on projects ranging from small objects to large public installations.

The city's Public Art Committee approved the $30,000 project budget on a 5-0 vote at its Aug. 6, 2025, meeting. Vice Chair Heather Gorman made the motion, seconded by Mira Carpenter, a student representative on the committee. The committee then selected DiCarlo's "SWING" proposal, again unanimously, at its Nov. 5, 2025, meeting. Public Art Administrator Ciera Coleman staffed both sessions.

The sculpture was funded through developer contributions that support public art across the city, according to a city newsletter. The project is a collaboration between the Public Art Program and the Parks and Recreation Department. Community members weighed in through an online engagement platform before the committee made its final pick.

By the committee's Feb. 4, 2026, meeting, DiCarlo was already working with a fabricator on final design adjustments, and site construction had begun that week.

Payne Park Tennis Center has 12 courts, a pro shop and a shaded courtyard where the sculpture will stand. The dedication ceremony on Thursday, July 30, is free and open to all.
