Downtown Sarasota's Main Street goes pedestrian-only Friday, Oct. 2, when the Fresh Fridays event series opens its sixth season with a yacht rock theme.
The free outdoor event runs 7 to 10 p.m. on Main Street between First Watch and Clasico, according to a city of Sarasota announcement published Sept. 28. The opening night, titled "Sunset Soundwaves: A Yacht Rock Experience," features a live set by the band Yacht-A-Rock, performing music associated with Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Chicago and Jackson Browne.
Photo boat, giveaways and local vendors
Attendees are encouraged to dress to the yacht rock theme.
An on-site boat will serve as a photo backdrop, and a welcome tent will offer free giveaways while supplies last. Seven local vendors will set up along the closed stretch of Main Street: Mattisons, Bricks, Tzeva from Art Ovation, State Street, Beso, Comida and Clasico.
Board approves $92,000 grant for Season 6
Fresh Fridays is a first-Friday series organized by the city of Sarasota and the Downtown Improvement District in collaboration with Next-Mark, the event production firm led by its president, J.T. Grano. The series runs monthly with a different theme each time, skipping January.
The district's board voted unanimously Sept. 1 to approve a $92,000 Public Realm Activation Grant to Next-Mark for Season 6, according to board meeting minutes. The board had voted 4-1 in June to accept Next-Mark's application and direct staff to prepare the grant agreement.
Retail concerns weighed against attendance figures
Not everyone on the board was enthusiastic. At the board's June 2 meeting, Director [FIRST NAME] Hampshire raised concerns that the street closures can hurt retail activity on Palm Avenue, according to meeting minutes.
At that same meeting, Next-Mark representatives Grano and Ester Soltesova reported that Fresh Fridays draws 2,000 to 5,000 attendees per event and has logged zero reported incidents over five years. The series has generated 158 million social media impressions, 50,000 interactions and 16,000 new followers, they told the board. Ocala is considering replicating the model, Grano and Soltesova said.
"We're excited to kick off the freshest season with Sunset Soundwaves," Grano said in the city's Sept. 28 announcement.
The full Season 6 calendar of dates and themes is available at fresh-fridays.com. The district board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6.
