Every traditional public high school in Sarasota County will field a girls flag football team starting in spring 2027.

Sarasota County Schools (SCS) announced the expansion Sept. 14 on X, saying the new teams will compete through the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). The district said the move gives more students a chance to play varsity sports and represent their schools.

The announcement covers at least six campuses. According to Florida Department of Education records, the district's traditional public high schools are Booker, North Port, Riverview, Sarasota, Venice Senior High and Wellen Park, the district's newest campus.

Middle schools set to build a feeder pipeline

The high school rollout is part of a larger push.

SCS announced July 23 that boys and girls flag football would also launch at all traditional middle schools in spring 2027, building a feeder pipeline for the varsity programs.

Florida has led the sport since the early 2000s

Florida has deep roots in the sport. The state became the first to sanction high school girls flag football around 2003, according to NBC Miami.

The FHSAA held its 2026 state championships in Tampa at the AdventHealth Training Center, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' indoor practice facility. Four classifications competed in a final-four format.

Sport is gaining ground nationally and in the Olympics

The timing aligns with a national surge for the sport. In January 2026, the NCAA added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program, according to IMG Academy. That designation opens a pathway toward full NCAA championship status. Flag football is also set to debut as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

District coming off a strong athletic season

SCS posted strong athletic results during the 2025-26 school year, with student-athletes earning 26 district championships, 12 regional titles and two team state championships, according to the district's athletic recap.

The district has not announced tryout dates, coaching hires or schedules for the spring 2027 season.
