Sarasota will swear in two at-large commissioners and pick its next mayor three days after the Nov. 3 general election.
The City Commission has scheduled a special statutory meeting for noon on Nov. 6 at City Hall, 1565 First St., according to the meeting agenda posted by City Auditor and Clerk Shayla Griggs. The seven-item agenda maps out the city's post-election transition in a single midday session.
The first agenda item is a State of the City address by Mayor Debbie Trice, followed by remarks from outgoing commissioners.
Commissioners will then vote on Resolution No. 27R-3436, which formally declares the results reported by the Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections for the two at-large seats decided on Nov. 3. The resolution directs Griggs to notify the two candidates who received the highest number of votes.
After the certification vote, outgoing commissioners will receive plaques recognizing their service. The winners will then be sworn in.
The newly seated commission will select a mayor and vice mayor before closing with remarks from the mayor, vice mayor and commissioners.
What's at stake
Three candidates are competing for the two at-large seats. Incumbent Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch is seeking a third term. Flo Entler and John Harshman are running for the seat held by Trice, who is retiring, as Suncoast Searchlight reported in October. In the August primary, Ahearn-Koch received 34% of the vote, Entler received 29% and Harshman had 18%, according to Suncoast Searchlight.
The race has drawn attention for its spending. Suncoast Searchlight reported that a Bird Key resident contributed $200,000 in two donations to Stand Up for Sarasota, a political committee that paid for advertisements supporting Entler and Ahearn-Koch.
How to attend
The meeting is open to the public. Residents who need disability accommodations should contact ADA Coordinator Jake Brown at (941) 263-6299 at least three business days before the meeting. Proceedings will be electronically recorded, and copies can be purchased from the Office of the City Auditor and Clerk.
