Sarasota Little League's 12U American All-Stars rolled into the Florida state tournament at Twin Lakes Park undefeated, having outscored opponents 52-11 across six postseason wins. They left Monday, July 27, with three losses and an early exit.

The team swept through the District 16 tournament in June, beating four opponents by a combined 41-10, then claimed the Section 6 championship over Golden Gate American, 2-1, on Saturday, July 18. That 6-0 record earned them a spot in the eight-team state field, hosted on their home fields at Twin Lakes Park in Sarasota.

The state tournament, which ran Saturday, July 25, through Monday, July 27, proved a different level. Keystone (Tampa) opened with a 14-0 win over Sarasota American on Saturday, July 25, and eventual state champion Chaires Capitola followed with an 8-3 victory the same day. Vero Beach closed out the hosts' run, 15-5, on Sunday as Sarasota American finished last among the eight teams, according to Your Observer.

Chaires Capitola won the state title and advances to the Southeast regional in Warner Robins, Georgia, beginning Thursday, August 6.

The numbers from Sarasota American's district and sectional run tell the story of a dominant summer. Seven of the 13 rostered players batted .357 or better. Miguel Bermudez led the lineup at .615, followed by Logan Maldonado (.462) and Dylan Parrish (.429). Parrish, Bentley Ariagno, Stone Meininghaus, and Jack McQuillan each drove in a team-high six RBIs. Ariagno and Grayson Hugo each hit a home run.

On the mound, Liam Smith, a rising seventh-grader, led the staff with 17 innings pitched, a 1.41 ERA, and 24 strikeouts. Parrish threw a one-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts against Clewiston in the sectional opener, then Smith pitched a complete game in the Section 6 title game, allowing one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Smith called the sectional championship intense and highly competitive.

Henry D'Hondt, a rising sixth-grader who plays catcher and pitcher, posted a team-leading .704 on-base percentage, drawing 11 walks across nine games.

Assistant coach Mike D'Hondt, who has spent 12 years in Sarasota Little League and has four children who played in the program, said most of the 13-player roster has played together since age 4 or 5.

"Some have moved in from out of town, but mostly, they're homegrown kids that have been developed here locally and that want to play for the local community," D'Hondt said. "To me, that's really special."

Head coach Aaron Meininghaus led the squad, with D'Hondt serving as one of two assistants. Entering the state tournament, the team had allowed just 1.83 runs per game while scoring 8.66.

Chaires Capitola, which dethroned three-time defending state champion Lake Mary, opens Southeast regional play in Warner Robins on August 6, with the regional winner advancing to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, beginning Wednesday, August 19.
